Past Performers (2009)

Al Wood and the Woodsmen

Al Wood is a multi-talented performer and songwriter with a deep reverence for the blues and traditionally based roots music. Wood‚ heart-on-the-sleeve vocals, harmonica-playing and guitar work make for adventurous live shows and recordings. The new and original Mood Swingin‚ Blues sound is rich and sophisticated while at the same time, stripped down and direct. Al Wood and the talented Woodsmen take the listener on an emotional Ferris wheel ride where everything goes and everything grooves and even the hurtin‚ songs‚ make you feel good.

Blues Harvest

In 2008 a child was born. On a completely unrelated matter, Blues Harvest was formed. Featuring Ed Young - A former henchman from Illinois, he is currently in the witness protection program. Mike DiSanto - Just happy to be here. Josh Norling - We never hired him, so it makes it kind of hard to fire him. Jake Rendell - Get's drunk and writes songs using Complex Game Theory. Keith Conway - The caged one, let out only to gig and consume small animals. Apart, they are nothing. Together... A Band.

Fighting For Tiffany
(alternative/rock)

We grew up as friends, we all loved music and things grew from there.

Kalle Mattson

Kalle Wainio began writing and performing songs under the pseudonym 'Kalle Mattson' in late 2007 at the tender age of 17. In July 2008 Kalle Mattson went into the studio to record their first self released EP entitled ' Telescope'. After countless shows in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding area, Kalle Mattson returned to the studio in January of 2009.  The result is a new 11 song disc entitled 'Whisper Bee' which expands and improves even further on Kalle Mattson's original folk, experimental, pop blend. Now with a new line up (consisting of Rory Lewis - guitar, Théan Slabbert - Bass, Jimmie Chiverelli - drums) 'Whisper Bee' was released in May 2009.

Porter

Porter formed 2008 in Sault Ste. Marie as guitarist Jason McLeod, guitarist Carl Rumiel, guitarist/banjo player Joe Gagnon, bassist Derek Rice and drummer Dan Nystedt joined forces. Original songs by Porter showcase a shimmering blend of traditional country, folk, and bar room rock. Porter’s instrumentation often features string band staples such as lap steel guitar, mandolin and banjo overlaid by clever lyrics and smooth harmonies. Life experiences, family and the local area inspire their songs.

Rusty Mccarthy

Guitarist, Composer, Painter, Poet . Rusty lives in Sault Ste. Marie and regularly travels to work on music projects. As comfortable of playing Jazz & Blues as he is charting a string section for a film score, he is an artist with many styles.

Shannon Moan

Shannon Moan is the voice of your wool sweater that keeps you warm on cool nights while camping in the north woods. She is the voice of your favourite coffee blend from your favourite coffee shop. She is the voice of that book that you keep reading over and over and over but never get sick of. She is the voice of a Tarantino heroine, always surviving, always strong but always vulnerable.

The Boot Hill Crooners

The Boot Hill Crooners are comprised of brothers Sheldon & Marshall Jaaskelainen, both of whom play with and amongst The Wild Turkeys. Although their genres differ immensely, they bring a mixture of original & old-time-roots tunes to listeners everywhere, The Boot Hill Crooners will be sure to have your toes tappin' with their fast grooving beats, and your tears a' flowin' with their calamitous (yet tasteful) lingering style, all of which are played and sang with enough sentiment to sooth any heckler or ne'er-do-well who may ask questions or cause ruckus.

Wishbone

The band Wishbone was formed by Dennis Duguay and Jeremy Salatuk to write original material. Chris Smith was later added on bass guitar and 2 albums worth of material was written. Glen Thomas was added on drums just before recording took place and the Wishbone album "Making Wishes, Breaking Bones" was recorded and is now available.

Roger Marin

Marins stage performance is well honed, engaging and brimming with his zest for life. His song writing resonates with his belief that “You only find satisfaction in music by doing it your own way. Right or wrong, you should do it the way you feel it. Don’t rush, just work hard and do it right.” He has made a world of friends in the business and has an enthusiastic and growing audience. Marins no-nonsense approach has earned him the respect and camaraderie of many fellow singer-songwriters. He has worked with the likes of Willie Nelson, Hayes Carll, Willie P. Bennett, Scott Nolan and Gordie Tentrees.

The Divorcees

Eastern Canada is not stereotypically known for its country music, but is home to many traditional Acadian, Celtic and Bluegrass artists. While the underground scene has spawned many punk, rock and metal acts, sitting somewhere in the middle between the old and the new is The Divorcees.

Elizabeth Shepherd

Elizabeth Shepherd pushes the boundaries of what is considered conventional jazz, all the while creating a sound completely her own. From London to Tokyo, Elizabeth has captivated audiences and critics on both sides of the pond. Her Juno nominated debut album, Start To Move continues to receive critical acclaim, and was voted the Top 3 Jazz Albums of the Year by the listeners of the Gilles Peterson show on BBC Radio 1 UK in 2006.

The Apostle of Hustle

Apostle of Hustle first took shape after a two-month sojourn in El Barrio Santo Suarez, in Havana, in 2001. This experience was mind blowing for Apostle of Hustle's lead (Andrew Whiteman) from the ground up: the community, the fashion, the pace and the music. Whiteman returned to Toronto invigorated about a possible music that did not yet exist. Knowing he wanted to create it, Whiteman took up residency at a local dive as Apostle of Hustle, a quartet. The band played Brazilian and Cuban folk songs, as well as Tom Waits / PJ Harvey / Marc Ribot covers. Whiteman played guitar and tres; plus he recruited Dean Stone on drums and Julian Brown; an old buddy from the mid 90's indie scene on upright bass. The fourth position was a kind of "open door" to whomever might show up on their nights.

Sun Parlour Players

CBC-Radio 3 says "Sunparlour Players..No question...a MUST SEE! These guys are so intense while playing kick drums, dobros, banjos, etc. And they sell preserves with their CDs! Honestly, this is ragtime, footstomp meets Arcade Fire plus the intense-strained face of Joe Cocker mid-grunt."
